Magical Realism
The magical realism in this chapter can possibly be how Jose Arcadio thinks that Pietro is a fairy can be considered. To look like a a fairy is realistic, but to be one is the magical part.
Character
Armanta seems to change the most in this chapter. Her and Rebeca start off as very close freinds, but all because of a man, they lose the closeness they had. This shows what kind of a person Armanta really is, jealous and hateful.
Summary
In this chapter, both Amaranta and Rebecca fall in love with the same man, Pierto Crespi, but he only wants Rebecca. He comes to the house to put in a pianola. Amaranta is mad about this and threatens to kill Rebecca. Rebecca is afraid of Armanta so Ursula takes Armanta on a trip away from Rebecca and Pietro Crespi. Aureliano also tries to get with Remedios. Jose Arcadio Buendia ends up asking for the hand of Remedios for him. She says yes. Jose Arcadio Buendia is also trying to build a pendulum machine that will help men fly. But because of a dream, Jose Arcadio Buendia begans to destroy all the equipment. Twenty-one men had to hold him down becuase of his insanity and they ended up tying him to a tree.
"Don't get your hopes up. Even if they send me to the ends of the earth I'll find some way of stopping you from getting married, even if I have to kill you."
This quote is significant to showing the true hatred and jealousy armanta has against Rebeca, and how wuickly she turned on her.
" 'This is a disaster', he said. 'Look at the air, listen to the buzzing of the sun, the same as yesterday and the day before. Today is Monday too.'"
This quote is really significant to foreshadowing Jose Arcadio Buendio's insanity.
