Chapter 6

Magical Realism

Colonel Buendia is shot in this chapter but yet he does not receive any kind of injury. This is magical because there is no way someone can be shot without any kind of bodily injury or at least a bruise.

Character

Arcadio seems to change the most in this chapter. He is at first liked by everyone, but then turns into a "monster" putting the town in danger and wanting to go on a killing spree. His true colors are hatred and being an abuser of power.

Summary

Colonel Aureliano Buendia goes to war and was a feared man. Aureliano left Arcadio in charge of the town but he put the town in danger, making Ursula think he was a monster. He's going to kill Don Apolinar until Ursula freed him along with others. She ended up ruling the town instead. She finally started talking to her husband, still tied up under the tree, due to her loneliness. Meanwhile, unexpectedly Amaranta told Pietro that she didn't want to marry him and he ended up killing himself. During this time, Arcadio also felt lonely and he went to look for his mother just to have sex with her. He thought she was a hooker. Instead of having sex with him she paid a lady named Sofia de la Piedad 50 pesos to have sex with him. They ended up having a child. Arcadio visited Jose Arcadio Jr. and agreed for him to own a lot of land. Arcadio was collecting money from the town and used that money to build his own house. Ursula is starting to regret that fact that she conceived him. Shortly after, Sofia became pregnant again. A man name Colonel Gregorio Stevenson sent a message saying that Aureliano wanted the town to surrender. Arcadio didn't believe him. The barricades were broken down and people were openly fighting in the streets. Then they executed Arcadio.

Quote

"Don't be simple Crespi." She smiled. "I wouldn't marry you even If I were dead."

This quote is significant to the striking point that Armanta doesn't want Crespi anymore and what caused his suicide.

"To my great honour," he said,"I am not a Buendia"

This quote is significant to showing how easily Arcadio turned on his own family and only cared about himself.

Theme

Solitude-This is the theme of the chapter because everyone is feeling lonely and doesn't feel like they have anyone.
