Chapter 5

Magical Realism

The magical realism in this story is how all Armanta's fighting for Pietro was pointless, because they come together anyway. But the magic of this occurrence is how Rebeca was the cause of this and Armanta was trying to get rid of her.

Character

The character that changes the most is Rebeca. She fights for Pietro and even thought she is scared of Armanta, sticks with him. But she ends up being so infactuated with Jose Arcadio, she just goes with him. She is truly very shallow and not trustworthy.

Summary

Remedios finally able to marry because she hits puberty. Rebeca’s wedding was going to happen at the same with Remedios, but Pietro was called off by an letter saying that his mother was on her death bed. The letter is supposedly forged by Armanta to delay the wedding. Remedios also decides to raise Aureliano’s son as her own. He is name is Aureliano José, but she soon dies. Rebeca and Pietro's wedding is postponed because they can’t be married while the household is mourning. The building of the city’s first church also delays their wedding as well. José Arcadio return to Mocondo brings the ends to the delay and the sadness and mourning. He is bigger and stronger and is covered with tattoos. Rebeca is intrigue by José Arcadio’s muscular build, and they fool around ending her marriage with Pietro. This also leads to them being kicked out of the house. Because of this, Amaranta and Pietro start to become close. Aureliano attention is turned toward the war between the Conservatives and the liberals. Aureliano joins the Liberals. Aureliano ends up leading the rebellion, and eventually conquers the town for the Liberals. He is known as Colonel Aureliano Buendía.

Quote

"Hoc est simplicissimus," Jose Arcadio buendia said, "Homo iste statum quartum matieria invenit"

This is significant to the reasons why the town thinks he is crazy. He is only speaking Latin but hey don't know this."

"Fuck nature tow times over," he said, "And I've come to tell you not to bother going to ask Rebeca anything."

This is significant to show how bad Jose Arcadio wants to have Rebeca and is really infatuated with her.

Theme

The theme of this chapter can be considered to be despair. Not only does Remedios die, but Rebeca leaves Pietro for Jose Aracdio. The setting of this chapter is very sad, and the start of war does not help.
